Karhuthe sneakers brand from Finland
Karhu was founded in 1916 as a Finnish brand known at the time as Ab Sport Artiklar. Specializing in men's and women's footwear, it wasn't until 1920 that the nom Karhu (meaning "Bear" in Finnish) and bear logo were used.
Initially, the brand manufactured discs and javelins for professional athletes. Durant that same year, 1920, the brand was even the official outfitter of the "Flying Finns" at the Summer Olympics.
The premier athlete who port wore Karhu shoes was Finn Paavo Nurmi. He won a total of nine Olympic gold medals between 1920 and 1928. The Finnish brand dominated the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, winning 15 gold medals.
Karhu 's international reputation for technical expertise makes it the premier mondial manufacturer of sports shoes.
Did you know? Karhu sold its three-stripe trademark to a well-known sports shoe company in Herzogenaurach, which still uses it today. Don't you see? It's the adidas brand. The logo with the three stripes was sold for the derisory sum of 1600€ + two bottles of good whisky.
Subsequently, Karhu officially registered its famous M symbol, derived from the word "Mestari", which means "champion" in Finnish. Karhu Research &Design's collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä led to the development of "Fulcrum" technology in 1986. This new technique should make running more efficient.
Even today, the brand is still recognizable among many others with its strong Bear symbol.
